What is Top Tier Gasoline and Why Is It Exceptional for Your Car?
There’s a study from AAA that found more detergent additives makes a significant quality difference in the gas you buy. That’s why AAA is recommending that drivers should buy Top Tier fuel because of its life-extending benefits.
But what exactly is top tier gasoline?
Not a grade of gasoline, Top Tier is more a performance standard in gasoline which is backed by major automakers, including General Motors.
But to understand how good this gas is let’s back up to the 1990’s. That’s when the Environmental Protection Agency required minimum levels of detergents in gasoline.
Some auto manufacturers didn’t think the standards were high enough. So, a core group of automakers created a fuel program for optimal vehicle performance.
Today, these automakers all recommend Top Tier gasoline:
• General Motors
• BMW
• Audi
• Mercedes-Benz
• Fiat Chrysler
• Toyota
• Honda
What are the Benefits of Top Tier Gasoline?
According to AAA, if you use gas that doesn’t have an enhanced additive package for a long period of time, it can lead to a reduction in fuel economy by 2%-4%.
It also increases emissions and the driving experience is lessened. Consumer Reports, another proponent of Top Tier gas had this to say:
"Given the technological trend toward more sophisticated engines, we think the EPA should consider raising the minimum detergent standards to ensure all drivers benefit from the type of performance and longevity promised by Top Tier fuels.’"
All Gas is Not the Same
As we said, Top Tier is not an octane grade. It’s fuel that has added a detergent package to it increasing the quality of the gas and the benefits to your vehicle. With a cleaner engine, your car or truck’s performance is preserved.
What’s the Cost of Top Tier Gasoline?
The price increase for making your vehicle last longer is about three cents more per gallon. If your car holds 12 gallons of gas, that’s an addition 36 cents to keep your vehicle in peak performance.
